Generic Name: Mupirocin 2% Ointment
Side effects: Mupirocin is generally well tolerated; there may be occasionally itching, burning, erythema, stinging and dryness at the site of application; cutaneous sensitization reaction reported rarely.
Precautions and warnings: When ointment is used on the face, care should be taken to avoid the eyes. Polyethylene glycol can be absorbed from open wounds and damaged skin. In the rare event of possible sensitization reaction or severe local irritation occurring with the medication
Pregnancy category: Studies on experimental animals have shown mupirocin to be without teratogenic effect. However, this drug should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed. It is not known whether this drug is excreted in human milk. So, caution should be exercised
Therapeutic class: Mupirocin
Dosage and administrations: Adult & children· apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area 3 times a day for up to 10 days depending on the response. The area may be covered with a gauze dressing, patients not showing a clinical response within 7 days should be reevaluated.
Indication: Topical treatment of primary and secondary bacterial skin infection.
Composition action: Hypersensitivity to mupirocin ointment or its base polyethylene glycol; evidence of moderate or severe renal impairment; not suitable for ophthalmic or intranasal use.
